Implantable biochip for managing trauma--induced hemorrhage

Publication number: 20120088997

Abstract: A biocompatible biosensor and transmitter device for temporary implantation prior to, during and following trauma-induced hemorrhaging detects the presence and level of at least one analyte and transmits detected data to a second, external device. Thus, a method for managing post-trauma patient outcomes includes providing such a biosensor and transmitter device, temporarily implanting the biocompatible biosensor and transmitter device intramuscularly in a trauma victim; and monitoring the presence and level of the at least one analyte detected by the biocompatible biosensor and transmitter device and transmitted to the external data receiving means.

Chemical and biological sensors having electroactive polymer thin films attached to microfabricated devices and possessing immobilized indicator moieties

Patent number: 5766934

Abstract: Chemical and biological sensors are provided that convert the chemical potential energy of an analyte into a proportionate electrical signal through the transducer action of a microfabricated device with an integral electroconductive polymer film. The microsensor devices possess a coplanar arrangement of at least one, and typically three, microfabricated interdigitated microsensor electrode arrays each with line and space dimensions that may range from 2-20 .mu.m and is typically 10 .mu.m, a platinized platinum counter electrode of area at least 10 times the area of the interdigitated microsensor electrode array and a chloridized silver/silver chloride reference electrode. Chemical and biological sensors constructed according to the present invention employ a thin electrically conducting polymer film that is specifically attached via covalent bond formation to the interdigitated microsensor electrode component of the devices.

Surface functionalized and derivatized electroactive polymers with immobilized active moieties

Patent number: 5352574

Abstract: New variants of electroactive and optoactive polymers are formed from the surface chemical modification and derivization of free-standing and substrate-supported polymer films. The free-standing or substrate-supported films are chemically modified at or near their surfaces to introduce hydrophilic and/or reactive functional groups, such as carboxylic acids, hydroxyls, and amines. Surface derivatization of the modified polymer film is achieved through the specific attachment of bioactive, immunoactive, electroactive, and catalytic agents to the surface of the electroactive or optoactive polymer film. In one embodiment, a polymer selected from polyacetylene, polypyrrole, polyanilane and polythiophene is modified to contain functional groups and an indicator reagent is covalently coupled to the functional groups. When an analyte in a sample reacts with the indicator reagent, electrical conductivity of the polymer is changed and presence of the analyte is indicated by the change in electrical conductivity.

Method of measuring an analyte by measuring electrical resistance of a polymer film reacting with the analyte

Patent number: 5312762

Abstract: The change in electrical resistance of an electroactive polymer such as polypyrrole, polyaniline or polythiophene when it reacts with an analyte is used to measure the analyte. The open circuit electrical potential of an electroactive polymer film is measured and an electrical potential is applied to the polymer film relative to a reference electrode to oxidize or reduce the polymer film to provide an initial reduced or oxidized state. Then the electrical resistance of the polymer film is measured in the absence of an analyte and the electrical resistance is again measured while the polymer film reacts with the analyte. The analyte concentration is determined from the rte and total amount of electrical resistance change.

Surface functionalized Langmuir-Blodgett films for immobilization of active moieties

Patent number: 5102798

Abstract: Langmuir-Blodgett films having hydrophobic surfaces are chemically modified to convert the hydrophobic surfaces to hydrophilic surfaces for immobilization of active moieties having bioactive, immunoactive, thermoactive, electroactive, optoactive or redoxactive properties. Langmuir-Blodgett films having a hydrophobic surface of omega unsaturated covalent bonds are formed from an amphiphilic, bifunctional surface active material having a hydrophobic tail group bearing an omega terminus of double or triple bonded unsaturation. The amphiphilic material may be fatty acids, phospholipids or porphyrins, and is preferably omega-tricosenoylamide or omega-tricosenoic acid. Chemical modification is carried out by exposing the hydrophobic surface to a reagent such as alkaline or acidic potassium permanganate, potassium dichromate or osmium tetroxide which oxidizes the omega unsaturated covalent bonds to provide hydrophilic groups such as hydroxyl or carboxylic acid groups.
